Factors are all the numbers(pairs) when multiplied together result in a given number.

    factors of 12--1,2,3,4,6,12
    1x12
    2x6
    3x4

Every number has a least two factors-- 1 and itself.
    factors of 5-- 1, 5
    factors of 30-- 1,2,3,5,6,10,15,30

I don't know of any clever or short cut way to figure factors.A good background in muliplication facts is helpful.I used one of those large multiplcation grids(tables)to help students find factors of a number.

(A multiplication grid or table is also great for showing students the multiples of a given number.)
