I have a cute plush animal brown bear in my classroom. I use Open Court and have a reading specialist working with my children two to three times a week. After a simple assessment to see what sounds need reinforcement, I pull out my alphabet cards. I review with my student or students. I hand the bear over to them and we sing "Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?" I see a "b" bbb looking at me. The children seem to enjoy this activity. Later, you can add whole words I see a c-a-t "cat". I encourage listening and paying attention. A special treat may be given if the students are really trying to do their best work.
