I found the opposite to be true... I have read Maniac with both third and fourth graders, and they have all enjoyed it. We do spend a lot of time discussing it, and really talking about what the dynamics of all of the different characters and situations are. However, it has been very rewarding, and I am always so touched by how sensitive my students are to Maniac and the other children in the book! We have had some very unique "bonding" moments in our classroom due to that book. My suggestion would be to do it the first time as a read aloud, and see how it goes for you and your students, and then turn it into a Lit. Circle book after you have had some experience with it and know what to expect from the students.
