    Including Time for Spelling
    By Bob

Yes, I agree. It is difficult to squeeze in a proper amount of time for spelling. This year, I successfully used seatwork time for the bookwork, but I included a 15 minute block before that for a mini-lesson in handwriting and spelling.

I used blackboard graphic organizers to teach the weekly encoding rule(s) in the lesson, but then for seat work, I used a word wall in the same form as my graphic organizer. Adding to the word wall was done during seatwork,(students made cards of sample words on color coded or shape coded paper). I included a rule for finding sample words: they had to locate the words within books/magazines they were reading. We have WINDY!!! weather all year, so the "wind", overnight, would blow away misplaced words into a "try again" zone on the wall.
I had much success with this method and it most adequately used the time limits in the schedule.
