I will tell you right off that I don't have a solution that will include both. My class has an independent reading time where they select any book they choose....AR or otherwise. I am finding that although many kids want the AR points others are really interested in reading books related to our current theme that may or may not be on the AR list.My real comment for you is that in my school and classroom I have seen students develop a real love of reading because of the AR program. I work in a low-income urban district. Many of our kids do not have books at home or parents who read to them. But since we have started this program these kids have learned to really LOVE reading. For the first time in my 20+years of teaching I find myself "reprimanding" students for reading!!! "Put that book away NOW--its math time!!!" LOL It is not all about points or goals (we don't focus too much on goals). Reading becomes an enjoyable habit. When our AR library closes down the last couple weeks of school my kids are moaning and groaning...saying "what will we read???" The focus then turns to other books and they are just as happy. So, give the program a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised!!
