We grab our Writer's Notebooks and head off to the lunchroom to observe another grade at lunch. Students just freewrite what they see, hear, smell, etc. We do this for 10-15 minutes, or as long the students can stay invested in their observations and writing. Returning to the class, I have the children share their free-writing with a partner. Together they decide on their best observation, description, or phrase. On an easel pad, I record one contribution from each student. We read over this rough draft, tweaking some of the words, phrasing, or sequence. We end up with a wonderful poem which is published and sent to the classrooms who were at the lunch period. The students really get a sense of how a poem can be found anywhere if you just zero in on observing and describing, setting a mood. A good connection is made on how you can use your WNB to write free verse poetry. Students then go home and observe a scene on their own. Using this free write, they write their own individual free verse poem. Who said it was difficult to write a poem?!
