Dick and Jane are great By Amy Monsky
|
| I am not a teacher - "just" a mother of 2 boys, currently aged 3 and 5. I came across Dick and Jane readers at Wal-Mart only 4 months ago, and began using them at once. My children (both of them) have had such success with these books, that I regret not having found them sooner, as both boys began (I emphasize began) reading at around 2 1/2, and even my 3 year old has successfully and independently read several of the stories. Although I think these books are fantastic, I also understand the need for phonics instruction, and so we work on phonics as well. I think both methods (sight word instructin and phonics) are both crucial to a child's success in literacy, and neither should be favored over the other.
