    Hi
I am still an undergraduate education major and we explored the writer's notebook. I feel this is a good way for the students to write, they can write about anything, make lists, tape in pictures, postcards, draw, etc. I would check them periodically and use sticky notes and write back to the students. Ask them questions about their stories, or tell them an anecdote that happened in your life as well. Writer's notebooks are there for the students to practice, as well as for you to learn more about them as individuals. Also, here is another idea. Get small pocket size notebooks and use them as conversation books. The students can write to you and ask you questions and you can ask them questions, it is like a written dialogue. Elementary students love it!
