Recipe: 2 cups of flour 1/2-3/4 cup water 1 tablespoon vegetable fat 6 pinches of salt Mix the ingredients together into a stiff batter, knead several times and spread out flat to a thickeness of 1/2 inch on a non-greased cookie sheet. Bake for 30 mins. at 400 degrees. Remove from the oven , cut into small squares, and punch holes in the squares. Turn dough over and bake for 30 mins. more. Turn off oven and leave the door closed. Leave the hardtack in the oven until cool. ( source www.nps.gov) I made some hardtack years ago when I did a Columbus unit in third grade. I has no taste, it's dry and hard but give the children a chance to see what life was like for the soldiers.
