To say I am shocked by the sentiments expressed by this poster and others would be an understatement. Leslie is asking for scientific evidence. Well, I would suggest you learn your subject because there is reams of scientific evidence...that's EVIDENCE, not conjecture. Man was never descended from Apes, but simply branched out from a common ancestor. Why did the apes stay apes?...Because they were well suited to their environment. Why did man evolve?...Because that particular branch found itself in an environment that was more survivable if man-like traits were used. Evolution only works if a new found skill, physical characteristic or behaviour actually benefits the user. This is not rocket science, but similarly it is not a 'hunch'. You cannot see one species evolving into another because it takes millenia...but it is a FACT, proven by fossil observation and DNA research that one branch of the dinosaurs evolved into birds...how's that for a species change. In DNA terms, the closest living relative to the Tyrannosaurous Rex is the turkey you have for Christmas...really! If ignorance is bliss, you must be a very happy person...
