I have given some of my children a journal to use for when they read a book (which they do every night). They can use the journal to write a response. That is so open that they don't really see it as a chore. They can summarize the story, write about their favorite part, tell why they liked it or did not like it, extend the story, tell what it reminded them of, etc. It has worked well with the small group and I may extend it to the entire class next year. They do not write in it every night. maybe once a week--a day of their own choosing.
