Read a couple of short stories and have students rate what they are feeling as you read the story or at the end. They have to pick a face smiley, sad, surprised, funny, angry, hopeful, doubtful, curious etc. They have those poster with all the moods faces on them or you could just pick a few. I read this one story about Elephants that had to be put to sleep in WWII in Japan because of the war. It was so sad, but it was a childresn book about hope and renewal of life. That could be a great story to read so that students realize books aren't read only for laughter although you could read a couple of dr suess books aswell such as the one about pollution The Lorak I think thats whats its called
