Check out the thread regarding Open Court. OC incorporates all aspects of a reading and writing workshop and is wonderful for first year teachers. There are so many resources and take-home books for the kids that it sounds like it would fit your needs. Often, children with a home life like you describe have a hard time rkeeping up with and returning things to school. Open Court uses "step-by-step books that are printed on newsprint and are intended to be kept by the child, not returned each day. I used OC the first four years of my teaching career and I LOVE it! I wish we had it back at my school, but we went to a guided reading program (Rigby). I miss Open Court.
