    We use Open Court also.....and it is BORING, BORING, BORING!!!! We have probably a half dozen workbooks that go with the series and they are even more boring....not a picture or fun activity to be had in any one of them. Unfortunately, my district is mandated to use this series and it is extremely time consuming (they recommend a 2.5 or 3 hour block).
    My suggestion to you, would be to look into the "Four Blocks" literacy program by Patricia Cunningham and try to implement some of those ideas into your program. You can make alot of the materials, use "real" books, and also purchase some of the materials at the teacher store. I have not attended any of the training...but have read several of her books and am trying to squeeze in as much as I can!

    PS ditch the Open Court if at all possible!!!!
