I am so sorry I didn't get back to you on Wed. or Thurs. as promised but a BIG ice storm came in on Wed. afternoon and everyone lost electricity till the weekend. We are back to normal now so I can concentrate on "regular things" and not that my deep freeze is thawing.(we didn't lose anything thanks to a friend's generator). Now on to my non-fiction unit for second grade.
I gather all my NF books and put in tubs.I put the same color sticker on all my NF books so the kids know right away it is NF. I have the kids look at several and write on post its what they see. Have a discussion and have kids put post it on chart. From this I write a class chart with the title: What Fiction Is and What Non-fiction Is. We add to this as our unit goes on and kids come up with something else.
Next day we start on the NF convention books they are going to make. Debbie explains these on page 148 but I will explain how I do it. Each day I focus on one convention. I read a page from a sample book and show it to the kids.We also start a chart and write the convention on it. I give each child a piece of copy paper. They write for example Labels at the top of the paper. Then they look in different NF books for examples of labels and they copy that onto the page. They also are to write the name of the book and page number under it. We discuss after they do this.On the chart by the word label I write what the kids tell me a label does in a NF book. Then I give them a photocopy of the page I showed when I explained what Labels were. They cut this out and glue this on the back of the paper. We put a number 1 in the lower right hand corner. I collect these each day.(put name on back at the bottom) We do the same everyday until we cover captions, cut-aways, photographs, maps, close-ups, types of print.
When we have discussed and made our chart of all the conventions we start to put the book together. We discuss what a glossary is and look for them in our NF books. I type up a Glossary with all the conventions and what we have decided they are and I have put on the chart everyday. I run copies for every student.Next we look for Indexes in NF books. The kids make an index page for their books. We do this by putting the conventions in ABC order and what page it is found. Then we discuss Table of Contents and look for these. The students make a table of contents for their books on a new piece of paper. Then they make a cover for their book. So the book goes: cover, table on contents, labels, captions, cut-aways, photographs. maps, close-ups, types of print, glossary and index. Another teacher suggested cutting out items from Weekly Reader to glue in the book and I thought that would be a good idea. They always have captions under photos.
After we have the book finished,(about two weeks, I am sure you could do it in one week if you tried)we do a wonder box. Kids put questions they have on an index card and put in a box. I draw one out and we discuss how we could find the answer to it. It might be in a book we have or our encyclopedia or we might go to the internet. This is explained in more detail on page 150 of Debbie's book.
We also work on autobiographies.I use Regie Routman's lesson in Conversations on page 143 to introduce this to the class.
I also run short easy artices from Ranger Rick and give to the class and we high light important info with highlighters.
Like I said I do a lot from Debbie's book when it comes to nonfiction. So since you have her book I may not have helped you any. One year we did Snake reports. I really guided the kids through it as they had never done a report before.I was pleased with the way they came out.But I don't do this every year. It depends on the time.
I am at the public library and my time is up so I don't have time to check my spelling. I hope it isn't too bad! Hope this helps.
