At one point I had eliminated homework. I wanted families to have time to spend together. Naively, I believed that children and parents would read together out of pleasure and that they would be doing activities together. Was I wrong! Although this was true for a few of the children, a large number of children did not read, nor did they spend time with their families in meaningful activities. Instead, they were happy because they had a bit of extra time to spend playing computer games. I've gone back to giving homework because it seems to force some parents to spend time reading with and talking to their child about what they've been learning at school.
