Boystown is a motivational system that encourages youth to develop new social skills. Essentially, the student is rewarded by points for positive, appropriate behavior. If a student is using inappropriate behavior, points are lost, and the teacher teaches the appropriate skill, the student practices that skill, and can make up some of the points that are lost. At the end of the day, the student tallies up points, and enters them into an account sheet, then the student has an opportunity to purchase items. I use match box cars, pencils, pens, little games, computer time, extra recess, juice etc... There are three levels to Boystown. The first level is restrictive, the second level allows the student to learn negotiation skills, and the last level prepares the student to re-enter the general ed classroom. The advantage to using this system is that the teacher is forced to stay positive and the teacher is constantly looking at student behavior that is positive. As with any system, whatever you put into it is what you get out of it. It has revolutionized the way I teach in my behavior unit. The kids really respond to it and it provides so many opportunities to teach correct social skills.
