My school in NH just finished a 3 year intensive study. My day combines aspects of what I did before with lots of what I learned!

In the morning I have a 20 minute word work time.

I then have a 30-40 minute block when I do "guided reading"/whiole group reading. During this time I teach reading comprehnsion through a lot of read alouds as well as children ocassionaly working in small groups or pairs as the gradual release of responsablity happens with a comprehension stratagy. When in small groups or partners they read an on grade level or slightly easy book.

In the afternoon I have a 45 minutes independent reading block. During this time all children read out of their book baskets. Each child chooses a baket of just right books to read the following week on Friday. During this time I confer with students one-on-one, pull stratagy groups, and the children work a "job" in one of their books that is connected to the monrings comprehension lesson. (5 minutes mini lesson, 3o minute read, 5 minute partner talk, 5 minutes wrap up)

After Independent Reading the children have 45 minutes of Writer's Workshop. (10-12 minute minilesson, 25 minute write, 5 minute wrap up)

At the end of the day I read aloud from a chapter book for 10 minutes.
