    Special vs. Regular

I have been both a specials teacher and a regular teacher. While I was a special teacher, not only did I have the kids once or twice a week for 45 minutes, but I was not even at the same school all week! I was at three different schools all week. The children who got into trouble in my classroom found it easier to get by with stuff, because when I would write them up and try to contact the parents, most times my scheduel was so that I would not be able to meet with them. If they were given detention or some other thing similiar, most times I would return two days later to find out that they hadn't served it because eveyrone forgot to tell them to go and was told that well, since the time passed already that they didn't have to serve it anymore. Mind you, I didn't have many problems, but the ones that did act up didn't care what happened because they knew I wouldn't even be around until two days later. A few kids even said as much, and one teacher told me once not to expect much because the kids had never listened well to the traveling music teacher, no matter who was teaching it! I was supprised by the lack of support. We are supposed to be a team!

I found it very funny sometimes when I would comment on how good a class had been, the teacher was always behind that comment with smiles and treats and rewards, but when a student had not been so well behaved it was as if who cares.

I am a regular teacher now that my sub days are over (thank goodness). I totally understand the trouble that Specials have and try to always help out when I can. Especially the traveling teachers, they will alwasy have a special place in my heart.
