    I've read many articles that speak of the importance of independent reading for fluency but do not give the statistical evidence.The best I can suggest are articles from the IRA which will cite statistical studies. I would go to IRA and do an article search.

    The IRA-- International Reading Association has info on evidence based reading instruction. Go to IRA web site.

    www.national/readingpanel.org This is a national panel which does research on reading instruction.

    www.auburn.edu/~murraba/ This is a great site for reading instruction.Prof Murray has many links to any subject on reading. It's called the READING GENIE.Make sure you are at the Reading Genie. He has an article on how to teach/model independent reading for SSR*.


    *The last article I read stated that ind reading in school such as DEAR or SSR built reading fluency.
