At my school, attendance has always been a big problem. Although we've improved through our SIP program (Student Improvement Program), attendance still remains a problem. I have 7th grade students and I've found that the number 1 problem is the parents. They don't wake their children up, let them stay up until all hours, do not provide transportation in bad weather, and generally don't care. On the brighter side, I've seen several students with previous attendance problems "get it together" and take matters into their own hands. THEY make themselves responsible for their attendance and get there on time each day. This is usually because they have learned to "like" school and realize it's the best part of their day. I don't care if they are drooping or unprepared. I'm just glad they are there.
