The only ideas I can think of are to snitch ideas from the way guided reading is organized. You could actually teach with literature, grouped be grade and grade level topic and switch. This might be a bit much to handle. A very simple starting place is map skills. Both grade levels must have skills they must learn so this would be a great starting point. This gives you more time to figure out what to do!! Another thing I would definately do is keep a timeline on the wall. Students label events they are studying on the timeline. This will also will give students an idea of time between each event and how events are related by time. All students would benefit from a reader's theater about an event in history- especially if they have "seen" where it goes on the timeline. I can't help with science either because I don't teach it! Good luck! Let us know how you do it!
