The pizza boxes are great. They stack nicely out of the way. One or two pieces of work a week is good. You can choose sometimes and they can choose sometimes what goes in them. They can see the progress they are making. Send them home at the end of the year tied up with a bow and a little saying.............."I have third grade all tied up!". The kids LOVE them and parents are proud of them!
My students will have a spiral notebook for Vocabulary words. This way they are not out loose to be lost, but close at hand to revisit whatever words they need. They also have a writing journal to use for reading responses. I have posted above because I need some more for my existing list. We then use that day's response during Grammar time to work on sentence structure, parts of speech, or whatever my lesson is about. Each child has a couple of folders for various work. I really encourage them to put all work back into their notebook (binder) under the appropriate tab ( English, Math, etc.) so they have it for their homework at night and to find it the next day to turn into me. We do Homeworkopoly on Fridays for those having all homework all week. http://www.homeworkopoly.com
As far as weekly reports, I send them home on Mondays for the previous week so they don't get lost over a weekend. I have a mailbox system that I bought at Office Max. Graded work is put into their mailbox when I return it to the student. That is sent home on Monday with a weekly report form attached to the front. The parent looks through the work, signs the report form, child returns the FORM ONLY the next day, and parent keeps the work.
Hope this has helped some. I will be happy to share any other tips if needed. Have a great year. I LOVE third grade!
