what I do is go into the room and ask the kids if they know what I do in the school...I ask this because it's a real eye opener on their attitudes...I have gotten responses from you teach reading to you teach retards....so you can easily see what you are up against. I begin my speech by asking what LD means...and usually they don't know...I say it stands for Learns differently...then I ask about IQ...and what is that...I tell them that all the kids in the school have about the same IQ except for maybe one or two here or there but basically everyone has around the same IQ...even teachers...and that the average IQ is 100. you can go into more detail if they're older I have printed up pictures of Tom Cruise, Robin Williams, Cher...etc...famous LD people...do a web search...you'll find enough....so now I show the pictures...who knows who Tom Cruise is...then I ask rich or poor? smart or dumb? if he was in 3rd grade whose class would he be in at our school? and then I say mine...because guess what Tom didn't learn how to read fluently until last year....true...the kids mouth hangs open...I tell a few more facts about Tom like he's a high school drop out because school was hard and kids were mean...you get the idea...and I do this will all the pictures... Then I ask the kids what they think I do in my room...with my kids who learn differently. We talk about what goes on and how I am specially trained to work with LD kids and aren't we all lucky to be able to be taught in the way we learn the very best... then I open it up for questions...you'll be surprised at what you get....once a group asked to come into one of my reading groups because they had walked by my room one time and it looked like fun...I use Saxon Phonics which if you're familiar is a bit quirky....so I said yes and I warned them that they would find it was very difficult to do and that in the end they might feel like they didn't know anything but they were game to try...it was about 4 kids...and they didn't know how to do it..and they were very impressed with my students who did know it. does this help at all? do you have any questios? I usually try to make my speech fun and involve all the kids, I move fast...kind of rapid fire the questions at them...and I go into it as deep as I need to you can usually tell when the kids get it and when I need to go on... and I always end my speech with having the kids promise that if they ever hear of other kids in our school making fun of kids who learn differently that they will come and tell me their names so I can tell those kids what I have shared with this class today....and they do!
