I also use alot of Jane Yolan's books...she writes about the NE but they are relevant to Social Studies...Let Swift River Go.

Kimberly Willis Holt (?) has written some very good novels (rather short reading) about growing up in Louisiana and East Texas. They are good read alouds or book groups.
