If we had to depend on my salary alone, my children would qualify for free lunches and we could receive welfare. It is my seventh year in the classroom; I graduated with honors in the top 3% of my very large class, from a prestigious university. I have won awards and was given an Eli Lilly Teacher's Creativity Fellowship last year. Parents stop me in the grocery to chat, and former students call to me across parking lots and wave on the streets. My $22,000 a year makes me feel ashamed.
