I do a combination of math and language arts review. I use the Math4Today series and the Daily Language Review. Shared reading using a poem as mentioned above also works. Morning work gets the students focused, but it is hard to get it completed quickly because of other things that the kids need to do in the morning that take them out of the classroom for varying amounts of time. My resource classes are first thing in the morning too. We usually take a few minutes to complete morning work when we return to the room and then check it or pass it in to be checked. I have found that there has to be some sort of accountability to make sure everyone does it.
