    Practice, practice, practice!

    Hi,
I have found that revisiting procedures---or establishing new ones as situations arise---really helps. Kids at this age need to know what is expected of them, and then having that procedure modeled and practiced. Some kids need more pauses for practice throughout the year. The more positive you are about doing this, the more willing your kids will be to "perform."

In fact, I would first have a class meeting and let your students know that you are having a problem with (name the situation), and that you would like to hear their ideas on how to solve this problem. When kids become part of the problem solving process, they tend to take more responsibility.

I hope this makes sense.... I truly do understand your situation!
