I have found that if I can show a child, by samples of his own work that there is noticable progress, it can make a difference. I remember a little guy walking down the hall holding a sample of his work from a couple of months ago in one hand and his new sample in the other hand, looking back and forth from one paper to the other and saying over and over, "That's better, that's REALLY a LOT better!" Also when he complains about having more quantity or difficulty of work to do make a comment that reflects how you are so proud of his progress and glad he is ready for the new challenge.
