    hwt

We have been using hwt for 4 years. I'm not always thrilled with the letter formation but the process is excellent. The children have fewer drills and take their time. I start with the exercise song, have them morph into something starting with that letter (yesterday we rolled like quarters back to our seats for the Q), we take time to establish posture and grip and work carefully. I don't use the wood pieces much now but do at the beginning of the year. Now I use white boards for the first day. The upper case G for next week is not one of my favorites. It works with wood pieces but is more difficult to write with the corner and cross. I like the fact that the kids only practice each letter a few times and they know what their "best effort" looks like. I also have them stop after making one letter and ask who is not satisfied and why. They love to share this and it allows the kids to see they don't have to be perfect. I ask them if they think they can do better and they always say yes.
