I taught this when I taught Gr. 6. I did an ancient Olympic competition for 5 ancient cities that actually existed in Greece. I used this website to gather information:http://members.aol.com/donnandlee. This site is terrific for any ancient civilization. The kids formed 5 groups, took on character traits described in the info about the city ( some were more war like, some were more scholarly, etc. ) They designed paper flags, made up cheers, decided on what to wear, etc. One student's dad actually made tee shirts with logos on them. Then the actual Olympics were some more academic things and some more physical things. I was limited to space and time so we had things like hopping around a cone, looking at a pile of things for 20 seconds, taking away the pile, and writing down what they could remember. We did word searches that were timed, an ancient spelling bee. Stuff like that. I gave my file to the incoming teacher so I no longer have it, but I hope this will give you some ideas.
