    reasons for decline
    By Michael Sonnier

Our substitute call up system is all handled by computer. The teachers with the absence call in and give a reason for needing a substitute. There are several hundred of these type call a day in my district.
The substitute that gets the call from the computer system has a choice out of six different reasons for declining an available position. Out of our group of two thousand substitutes, there is absolutely no way to monitor each and every reason for decline. There are simply too many calls, too many openings to fill, and too many people declining assignments. It would literally take hours to go through each call in order to document who declined what for what reason.
I substituted today at Thurgood Marshall High School. While waiting to sign in, the secretary was playing the vacancies back on her phone. The phone was on conference speaking where I could hear numerous openings with their reasons for being open. It took many minutes just to go through the ones from Willowridge High School. Think of going through all the offers and reasons for decline taking another half hour just to listen to.
P.S. I had this very same question when I first started out as a substitute. It seems the more I decline, the more I get called.
