    teacher envy

I agree with Lanie. There is the possibility that she came to see them to reassure herself that her kids still "loved" her.

Don't allow the kids to see you get upset about being compared to their regular teacher. They will do that no matter where you sub, and they might even enjoy upsetting you. It seems as if even sixth grade students enjoy routine, and they may miss their old routine more than their teacher. I have been out for the day, and I have found that the kids welcome me with open arms, even though they grumble when I'm usually there. I figure that it's the change, not their love of me that makes them act this way.

From what you describe, it sounds as if you have bonded with the kids. They now seem to respect you and do as they should be doing for a teacher. Keep that thought in mind.

Also keep in mind that kids seem to remember the "good old days" even when those days weren't so good back then. My fifth grade students professed to hate their fourth grade teacher last year, but now all they want to do is visit her. They hug her and even ask if they can come back to her class. Hey, the grass is always greener elsewhere!
