What to do about routine By Sub
|
| Just a few suggestions that may help. Arrive early if possible. If you are early, you might be able to pick up some things about the routine by just looking around the room. Arriving early would also give you time to ask a neighbor teacher if they know about the routine and to absorb the lesson plans. I usually arrive an hour early. If a helpful student is listed, maybe try to ask them privately about the routine so that rest of the class doesn't know you're asking questions. I see no problem with saying, "Just for today, we are going to..."or "I will try to follow your routine as closely as possible but because I'm not Miss Whatever and I'm not here with you every day, I may choose to do some things a little differently and that's okay. Let the students know what YOUR expectations are. As far as outside class times such as specials, lunch, recess go, another grade level teacher or the office should be able to help you be sure of exact times for those things. The daily report sheet that I use has a part for Next Time I Would Appreciate. I have put suggestions if I felt something was missing that would make the day easier for a future guest teacher or if I were to return to that classroom. After you sub for a while, you eventually get your own system that helps your days go more smoothly. Hang in there and enjoy your subbing experience.
