reason for no teaching jobs in Michigan By Linda
|
| I feel your pain! I really do! I graduated from MSU in 1979 with a degree in elementary ed. I spent my first three years subbing in local districts. I couldn't survive on the pay so I appied for a job in the insurance industry (under the suggestion of a good friend) but had to travel two hours both ways to get to my office. The insurance office then closed and I was back to subbing. After a few years of that I did get an adult ed teaching job for about five years which was intrisically rewarding. Meanwhile, I was taking the required graduate coursework to keep my teaching certificate, but focused my coursework in an area that would help me become more employable in a school district. Finally, 14 years after I graduated from college, I was hired into a K-12 public school where I still am today. Because of the late start I got teaching in the public school, I have another 12 years to go before I can retire. I will be 60 years old at that time. I have some bad news for you .... many of my colleagues are in the same boat. My suggestions for you in your search for a job are to do the following 1. Go back and get special ed certified 2. Be patient and wait for those openings because eventually they will come 3. Don't hesitate to get employment outside of education in the meantime, but keep current with the new educational trends.
