I have been doing the word walls for about three years. We have a list of high frequency words which our kindergarteners are required to know. These, and some words gotten from the readalouds are really the words I use. Each week I place three of the words on my dry erase board. I use a different color to show the three different words. If the word is a red word (orton Gillingham) I write it with red crayon or marker. I use these three words all week in my message time activity and at the end of the week if there is good recognition of them, they are retired to the wall. I really don't designate each letter of the alphabet as another color. I hope that this has helped you out a little.
