It would depend on the principal. My principal is tough, but she's approachable and usually understanding. I would go straight to her and explain. However, there is another administrator in my building that has some kind of...complex... she is totally irrational. I would not go to her. This would only get me on her "hit list" even if my excuse was valid. My mercy, my heart goes out to you. I have a kid in my class. He is a street kid, so to speak, and lots of times he doesn't respond to my "teachery, positive" voice. He responds best to louder, no nonsense commands. I am not a screamer, either. But when this child is misbehaving, I speak loudly and don't sugar coat it. Usually, he will calm down. This is the language and tone in which he can relate. On his good days, I use a lot of praise with him. But on his bad days, I use a "bark that is far worse than my bite".
