    mentors

At my previous teaching job I had a mentor that did nothing for me. She took on the 'job' only to get the continuing education credits; she thought the entire mentor program "was stupid and a waste of time". Needles to say, I got most of my information and help from other people becasue I seldom say her! She came to my room only once in 2 years & that was becasue I left a note asking to see her.
I left there & now I work in another district where I have the greatest mentor & principal My mentor pops in everyday to see how things are going, if I have any questions on the latest memo, etc. and offers support and encouragement. Our principal is not only an administrator, but also a 'specials' teacher in our building, so she can stay close "to the action" and not become distanced from what her staff is experiencing.
In short, mentors are great, but only if they really, really work at it and take their mentor position seriously. Chuuz, I have seen your responses to posts and you take your mentoring position seriously. I wish all veteran teachers did. A great big THANK YOU to all the teachers out there who help us "newbies" make it through the day!
Happy retirement, Chuuuz, and good luck on the ESL Cetification!
