I use to do a monthly but switched to a weekly, I check it every morning, very quick, either a smile or frown depending on whether or not they read. if I see a pattern of kids starting to miss reading at night, then they stay in at recess and read. I like the weekly better. I collect them on Monday am (some kids read over weekend) and let parents know on kids weekly report that goes home with each kid as to how their child is doing with at home reading. I don't make a big deal if parents don't sign... I encourage that but some parents are working couple of jobs and don't always get to it
