I tell my students that we have a goal of 10 seconds to transition from one activity to another. So when I tell them to put away their activity and move to the reading corner, for example, I begin counting backwards slowly from 10. When I reach 0, everyone should be settled. After practicing this for one day, I add some consequences the 2nd day. After I reach zero, I begin counting up until everyone is settled. If I end up counting to 6, I write a 6 on the board. Once all the numbers add up to 60, we'll add a minute to our day at recess time. It's a small consequence, but it helps them to remember that the transition time is important. After a couple of weeks of counting, students seem to have developed the habit of moving swiftly and quietly into the next activity. Obviously, the transition time would have to vary if students need to go into the hallway.
