Great link! The magnifying activities really are a hit among many ages (even mine!). One simple magnifying/observational activity: Discuss "habitat" and then take students outdoors with a long string (Maybe they can work in small groups). Have them make a ring with the string over the dirt or grass and silently (or not) observe everything they see over a period of a few minutes. Have a group scribe write down everything they see in that particular habitat. This time of year usually provides us with lots of little bugs.A sink/float idea that is a little more sophisticated is to give a small group (or individuals) foil. Instruct them to mold it into a "boat". Using marbles or teddy bear counters, have children estimate how many can be placed in their boat before it sinks. After they test their prediction, discuss why some children were able to put more in their boat then others. You'll need big tubs of water, of course, so it does take some prep. I do this one outside, as well.
