Here's a copy of the response I posted over on the Science board:

This summer a friend and I read/studied TEACHING READING IN SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, AND MATH by Laura Robb, and I am now in the process of writing some integrated units. The book is quite comprehensive in it's coverage of the topic, but I particularly like the chapters on reading strategies to use before, during, and after reading. I am incorporating those strategies in the units I am writing.

I am including writing connections in my units as well. My friend and I have also been reading/studying NONFICTION MATTERS (Sorry, I can never remember the author.) It's so inspiring. The author describes ongoing "passion projects" that are independent studies - reading, research, writing, presenting - that students do.

I've always wanted to do more integrating because I feel it would maximize the little tiny bit of time we all have to actually teach, and now I am finally doing it!!!!!!!! I can't wait to actually try the units out on my students!

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
