    Leaving a Position

I think the "unwritten rule" is mainly just a courtesy to the place where you work. I think that teachers are supposed to feel guilty if they leave at the last minute. I was in this position a few years ago. I worked at a private school as a kindergarten teacher and made $7 an hour!!!! Unbelieveable, right? Well, 2 weeks into the school year, I received a call from a public school offering me a position that I had interviewed for MONTHS ago! It was a hard decision for me, because I did feel guilty about leaving my kindergarten position. I felt bad about leaving the kids, and I felt bad about leaving the school with the task of finding another teacher. However, I did unfortunately have to be somewhat selfish and do what was best for me. After comparing $7 an hour to an actual salary, there really was no contest.

Luckily, the private school was fairly cool with it. The bottom line is, if you don't have a contract, you can leave when you want! Most of the time it is just a personal courtesy to give as much notice as you can. I guess it's a personal choice!
