My classroom pet has been a rodent (gerbil). They are very low maintenance. Being desert creatures they do not urinate as frequently as some other animals so their cages only need cleaning once a week. A small bowl of food lasts them about a week as well. One of the most loving pets I have seen is another rodent (rat). I was personally surprised that the rat (unlike the gerbil) seemed to have a memory of individual people. She would come out and approach people she liked better than others. Given what you've said above, however, I would recommend for you a betta fish. I have never owned one of my own, but I understand that they are very easy to maintain. Their water doesn't have to be changed as frequently as that of other fish. They have to be kept individually because they fight with each other so they can be kept in small bowls. I can't give you any more information than that, but you can talk to the people at a pet store and they should be able to fill you in. Good luck. JohnV
