We use a phonics program called Signs For Sounds...Have used it for years. Our students and our teachers really like it. it gives prompt for spelling and sounding out words. First graders need visual clues to start off because they are just learning the letter and trying to realte a sound to it.Also Fountas and Pinell have just put out a new Phonics Program..looks good. You might take a look at it.
