Wow, what a big question! For some reason I couldn't resist answering. I've taught at a Catholic Elementary for over 5 years. I've had many people question why I don't try to get a real teaching position at the public schools. I cringe when they say this to me. I challenge anyone to come into my third grade classroom for a day and then tell me that I'm not a real teacher. I might not get paid the same amount that a public school teacher gets, but the rewards I get are far greater. The parents want their children to go to the school because they know they are getting a special education. The parents support us by sending letters of encouragement and actually volunteering at the school. We expect more from the children and the parents support those higher expectations. This is proven in the fact that our school has performed higher on the state standerdized tests then most if not all the public schools. In my first year of teaching, two of my students lost siblings do to illnesses. I realize that this was very unusual. But I could not imagine not being able to take the class to the funeral and then share my thoughts about God and heaven. It is a great comfort that I can share my faith with my students. It in turn is a comfort to them. (This is coming from a person who is not deeply/devoutly religious.) Overall I could not imagine being anywhere else. The support from the staff and the parents are priceless. Maybe your experience is not quite so supportive, but I hope that is not the case.
