    be calm

The other two gave great advice. I had the same problem last year and was going to quit over the summer. I was very discouraged and depressed. But I just changed my thinking after reading a bit about powerful leaders and how they overcame huge problems. Kind of corny, but Thomas Jefferson once said-BE too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit troubles.
Just take your time with them and control every situation. Put them in rows, call them up one by one to line up if you have to, and the second they don't stand there with their lips closed, arms at their sides, and feet still, make them sit down. When walking, if they touch someone, they put their arms above their head until you tell them to put them down, make the whole class walk around the campus, if it's not too cold, until they get it perfect. If they can't sit in their seat, take the chair away. Do this without getting angry, always give them a clear warning before it happens, and they will respect you. In fact, they crave control. "ghetto" kids have little consistancy in their lives and they like the boundries. Just keep things calm at all times, and control every situation. One class I had was totally rearranged so that all students were facing the wall and if they turned around, I got on them right away. IF they new how to act, then they were allowed to turn their desk around and even have a partner. BY the end of the month, all but three were part of the class. IT takes time and unfortunelty, most of your time will be spend on discipline rather than acedemics, but you can't teach if you don't have control.
You probably won't like them, even after you do get them under control, but your job is to make sure that they are learning and make it clear that you take this job seriuosly. They are children, no matter how big and bad they think they are. Keep your spirits high and do not doubt yourself. You can overcome this.
