"Discovery Day"

I also hated show and tell- I felt it was a waste of time and all the children did was bring in toys and they had nothing to say about them. The class would get restless and stop listening.
So I started "Discovery Day". Each Friday I pick 3 children to bring in a discovery. I call them the "Discovery Teachers". I send a form home where they must write down 3 things about their object. I explain in the note that it must be educational or something the other children can learn from- not a toy. Some examples are momentos from vacations, instruments, collections, etc. Since only 3 go at a time and they are prepared to talk about their object I find it goes much better. The children are very excited for "Discovery Time". The children get the experience of standing in front of the room, the other children learn and it does not waste time.
