I am also a first year k teacher. My school is heavily involved in balanced literacy and my team is currently doing eight centers at a time and also pulling guided reading groups at that time. I do centers 4 days a week for about 45 minutes. We have a rotation schedule which tells the students where they will go. They have a partner they travel with. They carry their supply box and folder with them. I usually have 3 math centers,3 literacy,1 art,and computers or write the room and then my guided reading group. I LOVE IT!!
I usually have something for them to do in math like number sets, patterning, and we do a lot with grocery ads to locate certain numbers. All of our stuff is seasonal.
Literacy is things like word building, sentence building,reading the room,writing the room, locating letters and words in environmental print and newspapers.We usually have some sort of cute sheet on which they record their work for the different jobs.
