What is it about accepting a classroom position that bothers you? I teach at a Title 1 school in an inner city and unfortunately my (normally pretty well behaved for me) students who participate in the after-school tutoring program are totally wild during that time. If you can teach groups of kids who aren't "yours", what scares you about having your own? I would encourage you to think about what it is you are frightened of and try to figure out where the fear is coming from. I started teaching as part of an M.Ed to licensure program, meaning I got a classroom after only taking 1 summer of education classes. Talk about fears! I didn't have the opportunity to wait until I felt comfortable, I just had to jump in. Depending upon your reasons, that may just be the best choice. Teaching can be an intimidating job! But challenging that nervousness you have could strengthen you and make you realize you are a stronger person and better teacher than you realized! If you think about the reasons seriously, and realize that you really aren't ready, I'd say continuing with what you are pursuing sounds like a great way to "ease" yourself into teaching. Have you considered being a full-time aide? I did that, along with subbing, prior to deciding to pursue my Ed. degree and it allowed me to spend time in the classroom and work with a smaller number of kids, but with less of the risk (investment of time, creation of lessons, a majority of classroom management responsibilities). Good luck with whatever you decide!
